What’s with people trying to turn every single thing into a race issue? It’s just a Taylor Swift song people, it’s pop music, you can all calm down.

Alright, those of us who have been waiting, or simply paying attention because we’re fans, and have daughters who are also fans expected this day to come.

The day when Taylor Swift came out of hiding, and spoke about what has been going on in her life through her music.

Last night around 9pm was that time.

Dominique and Mikaela were blowing up one another’s phones, listening, re-listening, and dissecting her new song; Look What You Made Me Do.  That wasn’t good enough.  Dominique had to stop the show we were watching to play the new song through our Apple TV.

I have to say this about Taylor.  I honestly didn’t think she was going to come back from the entire Kim/Kanye debacle.  I wrote about it on July 18th, 2016  In the Kardashian-West/Swift war, who’s right, who’s wrong???  There just seemed to be too much bad press circling her:  there was the Calvin Harris break up, followed up with a super, awkward, stunt relationship with Tom Hiddleston, followed up by, seemingly all of her “squad” jumping ship and quite literally getting into the lifeboats of some of her arch enemies.  Calvin and Katy come to mind.  Based on all of this, and the large amount of egg that was on her face I thought it was going to be a good long while before Taylor would bounce back from the shit-storm that had become her life.

And then the song dropped, and I was like:  “Wow.  This girl is not to be fucked with.”  She is incredibly bright, calculated, and above all, I hate to say this, and all the TSwift haters are going to probably come at me pretty hard, but she’s insanely talented.  She is a master of controlling the narrative surrounding her; not unlike Beyonce and Jay-Z.  They are gifted enough, and vulnerable enough, to be willing to take an incredibly embarrassing moment in time from their lives and turn it into pure musical gold.  Love her or hate her, her single is outselling the second highest selling single on the charts of 15-1.  Meaning for every purchase that other song is getting, Taylor’s is getting FIFTEEN.

It has also broken the record for the fastest song to reach #1 on US iTunes history, by doing so in just thirty minutes.

These are numbers people.  This is not fake news, this is fact.  And even with all these cold hard facts, there is something I’ve been seeing on social media today that is troubling me a great deal.  Look I get it, lots of people hate her.  Listen, she gets on my nerves too, she’s as real as a Unicorn.  I completely understand why many, many people cannot stomach her.  But slamming her and saying that her video is cultural appropriation is just asinine.  People are saying she ripped off Beyonce’s formation video and is therefore appropriating African American culture.

Excuse me?  Come again?  How is this so?

Because she stood in the center of a group of back up dancers with her hands on her hips?  This makes her video disrespectful to an entire race, because Beyonce did it too??  I have news for you people who have issue with the hands on hips while wearing a skimpy outfit female pose.  Wonder Woman did it first.  Wonder Woman is white, or at least has always been portrayed as a white amazon women with jet black hair.  So maybe she’s Egyptian, I don’t really know, and I honestly don’t fucking care, and seriously neither should all of you who are going off about one screenshot that you happened to see online today, and now you’ve determined that Taylor “the victim” has stolen from Beyonce.

Well guess what, Janet did it before Beyonce, and I don’t see Janet’s army of fans crying or gnashing their teeth in public.  JLo’s done it, Britney has done it, Madonna, Lady Gaga…holy fuck people if you’re a female pop star you’ve probably worn a black outfit and fishnets on stage while having your hands on your hips, surrounded by hot, ridiculously good looking back up dancers.

Stop.  Just stop trying to make every God damn thing about race.  There is already enough racial tension out in the world without white people stirring up fake racial issues between two legends who actually happen to be friends.  Also, have you read the lyrics?  She flat out takes responsibility for bringing this upon herself;

“The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure
Baby I got mine, but you’ll all get yours”

My daughters and I happen to believe that she’s talking to the “old Taylor” when she sings; “look what you made me do, look what you made me do…”  I think this song is about herself making a mess of her life, and allowing others to make a mess of it as well.  I don’t think she’s playing the victim.  I do think she has done so in the past, and I also feel like she is the queen of suck and blow.  But in this instance I have to say I feel like she’s pointing the finger of blame as much at herself as she is at others.  The “take-down” of Taylor Swift was a joint effort.

I think the thing about what I’ve seen on social media that is pissing me off the most is how many women are just bashing the shit out of a young successful woman.  Can we just please stop.  You don’t have to like the song, hell you don’t have to like the woman, but what skin is it off your back whatever happened to prompt her to write this song???  And why do so many people have to be so hateful, and aggressive in their comments about the woman?  There are many women that I see, that I read about, that I strongly disagree with and have no time or interest in them as human beings, but I don’t go after them on my social media.  I just absorb the reality that we’re not all going to like one another, or admire one another; but to say hateful, spiteful, cruel things.  Nah, I don’t see the point, and I really wish others would behave the same.

Rant over.

Anyway, for those who aren’t paying attention all the artwork linked to the single has featured the imagery of a snake.  A snake eating itself in some instances.  Is Taylor the snake?  Is everybody else?  Will we ever know?  It’s doubtful, since her people have already said that she will not be promoting this album.  Meaning there won’t be any Rolling Stone articles, or Good Morning America sing alongs for it.  Nope the word is that she’s just going to let the music tell the story.

For now.

Anyway if you have the time and are so inclined to know what all the fuss is about, here are the lyrics so you can judge them for yourself.

“Look What You Made Me Do”
I don’t like your little games
Don’t like your tilted stage
The role you made me play
Of the fool, no, I don’t like you
I don’t like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you (oh!)

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don’t like your kingdom keys
They once belonged to me
You ask me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure
Baby I got mine, but you’ll all get yours

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
(Look what you made me do)
(Look what you made me do)
“I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.”
“Why?”
“Oh, ’cause she’s dead!” (ohh!)

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

  1. Look at the time we live in! Everything, anybody says anymore is being judged racially. That’s the truth of it! How did we get here? How can we move on? I don’t know that answer to that, I wish I did but it’s getting ridiculous! Personally, I love TSwift. She’s from my area in Wyomissing PA, That’s where she was born and grew up for a time. That’s until her parents realized her talent and gave in to her persistence to go to Nashville and hawk her songs, at a very young age.
She’s a mega-talent. She works hard and produces quality music and despite all the crap that other people say about her. It’s all laced in jealousy, I believe. The girl’s got balls that for sure and I for one think she is awesome, regardless of the shit other people spread about her. I believe she’ll always rise up to the top, because she was raised right and still has that constant input from her very awesome parents,. Go TSwift! I’m on your side!
